I have focused on the use of the simple STAR model for the structuring of the selection criteria. The model helps to identify the situation, outlines the task performed in the situation, describes the action taken by me in the situation and explains the result or the impact of the action. Team work skills Situation: In my high school while pursuing the graduate degree I was involved in a research project for conducting primary research on a new product launch. The research project was divided into two parts. The first part involved collection of data from the consumers about their perceptions of the new product and the second part involved compilation of the data and using of various statistical tools in order to analyze the data and prepare a hand written report of the same. Task: The co coordinator of the project had divided the class into different teams and the teams were assigned various parts of the project. This was done in order to facilitate quick completion of the project work. My team was assigned to complete the final stage work of preparation of the hand written project report. Action: The team discussed the process of doing the report in a meeting where it was decided that the report will be divided section wise in between various team members. My role was to co ordinate the works of the other team members. I was supposed to collect the report portions from the various team members and combine them together and report for the overall progress of the same. We agreed upon a schedule for the same and all reports were forwarded to me within the stipulated timeline. Finally I assembled and combined all the arts of the report efficiently and prepared the final project. However after the preparation of the final project I forwarded the same report to all the other team members for their consent or any further suggestions. Finally with the consent of all members I was able to deliver the final project. Result: The result was positive as we secured a high distinction and the project was completed on time and our work was appreciated by the teachers and other team members. Good and effective communication skills Situation: I was appointed as a waitress in Arrow Game in Melaka, Malaysia Task: My task was to manage a group of foreign delegates along with my team members Action: Many of my team members lacked appropriate communication skills hence I spoke to my team members and trained them to understand non verbal communicative signs in order to cater to the basic needs of the delegates (Southwood, 2012). Result: The final result was positive and the delegates were impressed with our services and we were given a token of appreciation by the manager of the hotel. Decision making and judgmental skills Situation: While working as a sales assistant in Tims Style Melaka, Malaysia I faced a grave situation where my junior had sold a wrong item to the customer and the customer companied to the company executive about the same. Task: The major problem was that my junior had sold a wrong item to the customers. This created a job issue for my junior and also an accountability issue for me. Action: I was given the responsibility to take a decision in this matter. I was supposed to inform the senior level management about whether it was the fault of the junior assistant or it was a fault within the clause. My decision would make a negative impact on the career of the junior assistant who was new in the company and was not highly knowledgeable about products. Result: The decision I took was beneficial for both the parties. I informed the senior managers that the junior was not totally knowledgeable about the products and the lack of guidance by any higher authority made me make this mistake. Further I spoke with the client and assured him that product had certain other benefits which the client can avail and using my good convincing skills I convinced the customer. Customer service Situation: While working in Arrow game I was faced with a situation of customer service interaction with one of the customers who visited the hotel. The customer was very rude and complaining in nature and since I was in charge of serving drinks to the customers hence I had to encounter her negative behavior within the company premises. Task: In this situation a customer complained about an insect in her drink and she was very upset about the situation. On enquiry it was found that there was no evidence of any inset in the drink. However the customer was aggressive and was not ready to accept any views of the hotel staffs. Action: Being the front office executive I had to console the customer and also sooth the customer in order to maintain the goodwill of the hotel in the eyes of the other customers present there. Hence I took her to a different room personally spoke with her for minutes and understood the fact that she was out of money and hence created the drama so that the cost of the drink could be foregone. Empathizing with her situation I offered her a complementary drink and she also apologized to the hotel staffs about the accusation and the rude behavior she expressed. Result: The problem was solved effectively and she was pleased at the customer services provided in the hotel. Moreover she visited the hotel again with her friends and paid an extra amount for the previous days drink confirming that she likes paying visits to this hotel. Research analytical skills Situation: While pursuing my legal course in the field of social science and legal issues I participated in a legal mooting event. A legal moot is a one act legal play which is conducted by the legal students. The mooting is a form of legal court case where a court case role play is conducted in order to give the law students a practical experience in the following field. Task: I was given the part of the lawyer and was bestowed upon by a case which was a very complex social case on a rising social issue. However I was not given any case references or any previous case links in this matter. Hence I had to conduct my own research over the case issues and form a draft which I would have to execute in the moot court case event. Since this was a part of my semester activity hence I had to be very careful in conducting the case in a relevant manner so that my semester marks would not be hampered. Action: I made a thorough research of the academic journals and the relevant case laws in order to gain suggestions about the case. For further investigations I explored the relevant cases or the moot cases which are similar to my case study. I gained references from academic journals and academic law books in order get knowledge about the whole case study. I also contacted my seniors in order to acquire their advice on how to conduct the moot case study and what relevant points should I include in order to make my case stronger. Result: Finally on the day of the moot court case, I was able to make my case stronger in comparison to the opposition lawyer. The facts collected by me helped me to defend my case at every turning point of the case. The judge and the concerned professors were impressed by my through research on the case topic and my production of the relevant laws, sections and subsections. I won my case due to my excess efforts and highly developed analytical skills. I was able to establish the fact that I have very good research skills. These highly effective research skills helped me to secure a high grade in the semester examinations. Technical skills Situation: I was given the job to revive lost data base from the DBMS system in the computer while working as a HR. The data was every important and relevant because they were the customer and client information which were stored within the system without any manual backup. Task: The breakdown of the technology had resulted in the loss of client case data in the DBMS system. The company had given me the responsibility to revive or create new data overnight for all the clients in order to facilitate the progress or the cases (Brandon, 2013). Action: Since the time of my joining I had kept e record of the client data in my own personal computer. Hence I had the opportunity of accessing the lost data. However it was a challenging to convert the data and record the whole data within the DBMS overnight. Nevertheless, I took the opportunity to revive the data which I had recorded by taking the data out from my own personal computer and creating the data list in the DBMS overnight. I used my fast typing speed and high technical and computer knowledge in order to record the data in a super speedy manner. Result: This made a positive and a good experience about my technical skills in my office. I was able to create a new data base overnight and everyone in the office appreciated about my hard work, dedication, typing speed and moreover my effective computer and technical knowledge. Planning skills Situation: While pursuing diploma in business administration, I was required to participate in a business fair for the social welfare purposes. This fair was organized for the contribution of fund for social causes. The plan of the fair was to establish various stalls with usable products and food products to the customers and the fund collected from the same would be forwarded to the social child care organizations. Task: My task was to organize the marketing and promotional activities directed towards the promotion of the products for sell. The major part of my task was to organize the whole event and plan for the appropriate marketing strategies for the promotion of the products so as to increase the sale of the products and fetch a good revenue amount in order to forward a huge amount to the social organizations. Action: I set up a strategic plan for the same. I prepared a marketing proposal including the promotional strategies and the appropriate financial fund and expenses that the marketing strategies and promotional strategies are expected to incur. Then I showed my proposal to the working committee of the college who was in charge of the whole event. The committee considered my proposal and we decided to implement the marketing campaign program. Finally I contacted different sponsors who would be able to sponsor the whole event and the different stalls. I also contacted the different concerned persons like the people who are dealing in designing hoardings, online promotions and also the print shops for the printing of the pamphlets. I arranged and made a blueprint for the construction of the different sores within the campus. The stores were allocated to the different students and I selected the tem leaders from among the various team members in each stall. Finally the event started and it continued for around 3days. Result: The end result was a huge success of the event. Majority of the products were sold and huge amount of fund was collected for the funding purpose of the social organizations. The committee informed me that as a result of my marketing campaign I was able to attract more that the expected number of customers. Reference list Books Brandon, M. Bent on revenge Leonard stops at nothing to find his wife's killers and kill them. A Freedom Writer Toast For Change English Literature Essay

A Freedom Writer Toast For Change English Literature Essay A Freedom Writer named Maria entered class during the Toast for Change and was the first person to declare what she wanted to change in her life. Maria didn’t want to end up pregnant at fifteen like her mother, end up in prison like her father, or wind up dead at the age of eighteen like her cousin. She wanted a clean slate, and a bright future, but she didn’t want to start by reading Anne Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl. Maria felt she couldn’t relate to Anne Frank, and on top of that she hated reading. Ms. Gruwell believed Maria would find herself within the pages of the book, and Maria wanted to prove her wrong. So one night as she read about Anne and the hardships she endured while living in the attic she realized Ms. Gruwell had been right! Anne and Maria have a lot of things in common. Even though Anne wasn’t Latina, and didn’t grow up in the same neighborhood as Maria, these two girls faced both discrimination based on the way they looked. After Maria finished the book Ms. Gruwell began to notice changes within her student. She had a better attitude in class, more focused on her studies, and became more interested in class material. # 2 In the fall of 1995, a freedom writer was sent on a mission by her family. Her goal is to defend her own against and testify against a rival gang member. This young woman was a witness to a murder committed by her friend Paco. A rival gang member sat on the opposite side of the court room falsely accused of the murder. She was always taught to protect her family no matter the circumstances. Her mind should have been made up, lie and go home, but as she sat on the witness stand two natures were at war inside of her, good and evil. The good nature told her to do what is right and tell the truth, the evil nature kept chanting protect your own and send an innocent man to prison. The decision had not been so easy anymore and someone made what Paco thought would be a smooth trial into someth ing her family and friends never thought could happen. On the opposite side of the court room, sat the rival gang members family. Her eyes gazed over their faces, almost all were filled with anger except one. A woman the author described as being strong with tears in her eyes. Out of all the faces in the court room this one was familiar. The strong woman with tears in her eyes resembled all the author and her mother went through when her father was on trial. She saw her mother and herself in the woman’s shoes, and a flashback of the day her father was sent to prison. At that moment she knew what she had to do. It frightened her because this was not part of the plan, if she did what was right the mission would not be accomplished and the one principal that held her family together would be shattered. The image of her mother gave her the power to end the fight between right and wrong. In this court room she realized the power she possessed. She could give this woman what was de nied to her mother so long ago, the truth and her family.

Unemployment Within the Labour Market is Primarily Voluntary Essay

Unemployment Within the Labour Market is Primarily Voluntary - Essay Example Unemployment within the Labour Market is primarily voluntary Macroeconomics is a discipline that entails structure, performance and behavior of the economy as a whole.Conversely, microeconomics is a discipline that puts emphasizes on the market behavior of individuals, consumers and organisations in the efforts to understand the decision making process of organisations and households. It is concerned with the relations of individual buyers and sellers. Both macro and micro economics play a great role pertaining to unemployment in the world especially in the United Kingdom (Wyplosz and Burda 2009) The connection between these two disciplines and policies has led to constant media attention as well as a central role in political debate (Price and Chrystal 1995). The recent slow down in the economic activity in, U.K, has raised new issues over the unemployment policy with clear evidence of failure of economic policies adopted since the election of the current government. Though there has been growth over the past few days, very little has been do ne in the reduction of unemployment. Concepts such as human and social capital have been used as the basis of analysis into this predicament. The recent certified data on a market research in the UK market shows a great drop in the unemployment although the labour market still remains extremely weak. Elevated unemployment combined with squat growth in pays is certain to persist on the economic trend in the coming days. According, to Bade and Parkin 1983, the labour survey measure by the government there has been a notable decline of rates in jobless from 16-year high of 8.4% to 8.3% in the last three months giving way to an improved labour market. ... e government there has been a notable decline of rates in jobless from 16-year high of 8.4% to 8.3% in the last three months giving way to an improved labour market. The vacancies data has also fallen as it casts doubt on whether the private sector is in a position to recruit a sufficient number of people to balance the increased rates of unemployment being experienced in the public sector. Toting up, the inflation runs at 3.5% thus affecting the pay growth that has dropped to a large extent leading to a lug on the spending of consumers and the growth of the economy though the lug is much less compared to the previous years (Taylor 2000). Concepts Human Capital and Social Capital Human capital concept denotes elaboration of the metaphorical statement, which states that education is the investment in the future. As a rule, the analytical tools that are applied to investments in this capital include a measure of stocks and rates of return to investments. This may as well be extended in order to verify the skills and knowledge applicable to an individual’s experience in the labour market (Christos 2005). Analysis carried out on the long term unemployment has proved that work experience is related to the growth of human capital. In addition, long periods of joblessness could lead to a fall in human capital, which is also known as skill atrophy. Likewise, skills can be corroded if they are not put to practice while knowledge becomes outdated if it is not updated. Thus, employment could be related to a particular set of adopted behaviours and attitudes, which include communication, punctuality, dressing mode and so on. The main effect of erosion on such behaviours is connected to prolonged unemployment (Nadiri and Arango 1981). On the other hand, Lewis and Artis 1991

International Business Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2250 words

International Business - Essay Example 1. Introduction The French food retailer Groupe Auchan S.A. (Auchan) is one of the world’s top retail and distribution groups and the fourth largest food retailer in France with a market share of about 12 percent (Standard & Poor’s, 2011). It competes with European giants such as Carrefour and Casino. Auchan has a strong position in the hypermarket segment which contributes about 80% of the group’s revenues. In addition to intense competition, rising inflation has been holding back consumer spending in Western European markets. Auchan has expanded into several Asian countries and also in Central and Eastern Europe. India has a huge retail market but it has FDI restrictions and does not permit foreign companies into multi-brand retail. Auchan has been attempting to enter into India through a franchise agreement with Dubai-based Landmark Group. The Landmark Group, founded in Bahrain with a single shop, has grown into one of the largest retail organizations (Landmar k Group, 2012). Currently, the Landmark Group operates the SPAR hypermarkets and supermarkets in India but their agreement with SPAR is set to come to an end. Auchan Groupe intends to enter into a franchise agreement with the Landmark Group until India amends its FDI policy. As of now India does not permit FDI (Foreign Direct Investment) in multi-brand retailing. 2. Rationale for choosing India India offers huge potential for the retail sector as the disposable income of the middle-class has been growing. FDI in different sectors has been increasing in India and the Indian currency (Rupee) has become strong in the international market. However, PEST analysis would help in evaluating if Auchan’s decision to enter India is a viable proposition. Political The political situation in India is unstable as it has a coalition government since no single party has clear majority. The industrial sector also faces opposition and the growth in agriculture has been slow. However, the role of the central government as the intermediary of the state governments is now ending (Mohan, 2006). This indicates that states now have autonomy while the growing middle-class favours liberalization. The business conglomerates in India have turned their attention to retailing (Deloitte, 2008). The Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Government of India, is the nodal agency for monitoring and reviewing the FDI policy in India on continued basis (Tyagi, 2010). Economic The Indian economy has undergone tremendous change. The Indian economy has recorded high growth rates and is an attractive destination for investments (IBEF, 2011). The Indian economy is expected to grow at 7.5% and is expected to contribute to the recovery of the world economy. The Gross Domestic Product (GDP) was 8.5% during 2010-11 against 8% in 2009-2010. Over the next two years India is expected to attract FDI worth USD 80 billion according to a research report by Morgan Stanley as cited by IBEF. India’s reta il sector is expected to grow to $635bn by 2015 (Sengupta, 2008). At the same time, food retail is expected to grow to $1.6bn over the next five-year period (Srivastava, 2008). Social The modern cities such as Delhi, Mumbai and Bangalore show evidence of modernization and adaptation to western standards under the influence of globalization (Pick & Dayaram, 2006). Growth and development in communications technology, development of transport infrastructure, widespread availability of western

Death of a Salesman Essay -- essays research papers fc

Death of a salesman The Death of a Salesman, by Arthur Miller is a controversial play of a typical American family and their desire to live the American dream â€Å"Rather than a tragedy or failure as the play is often described. Death of a Salesman dramatizes a failure of [that] dream† (Cohn 51). The story is told through the delusional eyes and mind of Willy Loman, a traveling salesman of 34 years, whose fantasy world of lies eventually causes him to suffer an emotional breakdown. Willy’s wife, Linda, loves and supports Willy despite all his problems, and continually believes in his success and that of their no good lazy sons, Biff and Happy. The play takes place in 1942, in Willy and Linda’s home, a dilapidated shack on the outskirts of a slum. Willy has spent his whole life teaching and believing that you can achieve success by your appearance and by making yourself as amiable as possible. Eventually Willy begins to fabricate stories at himself to be able to live with himself be cause he can’t meet his own expectations. He falls deeper into his lies, making himself and his family suffer for it. (Thesis). In the play Death of a Salesman, Arthur Miller proves he is America’s social critic when he criticizes Willy’s relationship concerning his family, his lack of success in achieving his goals and his dreams along with his inner turmoil and personal collapse which result in suicide. In the onset of the play, Willy told Linda that you â€Å"work a lifetime to pay of a house. You finally own it, and there is nobody to live in it† (Cohn 56). This quote shows how Willy strives his whole life to make a home for his family and by the time he sees the realization of that one dream, his family has drifted apart and he is alone with his haunting thoughts and his ghosts. Willy has such high expectations for himself and his sons, and when they all failed to accomplish their dreams, they were unable to accept each other for what they truly were. Willy raised Biff with the idea that success depends on whether or not a person can sell himself and not how smart a person is. Biff’s tragic flaw is his acceptance of Willy’s values and not creating any of his own. When Biff realizes his father is a fake, he becomes a lost individual and he does not speak to his father for 14 years. In Willy’s family it is always Biff who receives recognition, however, H appy strives for attention too... ...sm CLC.2 . Detroit: Indiana University press. 1971. 68-96. Bibliography Bloom, Harold. Dreaming Better Dreams Essay

There is no doubt everyone has dream. It is an experience that occurs during sleep. However, dreams are not only all about sleeping experience. We have dreams in life and these dreams are the things that we aspire to have, the status that we want to establish, or the kind of life that we long to have in the future. Thus, at times we are daydreaming that we are there, about to fulfill our dreams. In Mark twain’s The Mysterious Stranger Satan was mentioned as ghost standing at the behind the food processor and admiring a person’s lawn-mowing skills. It was not clear whether it was a dream but dream sometimes appears as one’s night mare. In the ensuing conversation between Satan and the person, Satan says â€Å"dream other dreams, and better† (120). Here, it was not clear whether Satan was advising the person to have a better ambition in life or he was just inciting a person to think of something beyond what he can do in order to make sin. But what ever is Satan’s intension, there is a truth in his statement. One should really have dreams life, a better dream. Dreams as some psychologist say are simply product of our imagination. They say, when we are asleep, our sub-conscious mind becomes active which us to dream dreams. No one likes bad dreams, but everyone enjoys good dreams. In dream, we can do anything that is impossible in real life and when we are awakened we regret that it was only a dream. The truth is we can dream a better dream that is not merely product of our subconscious mind when we are asleep. Our dreams can turn to reality if we could overcome anything that limits us. Our dreams can be fulfilled if we let all our strength, courage, strength, wisdom, and all our best efforts to pull together for a single purpose, achieving our better dreams in life. An ill Time to Laugh In the Bible, particularly in Ecclesiastes chapter 3, the writer states that â€Å"there is a time for everything in this life. There is â€Å"a time to be born and a time to die†, â€Å"a time to weep and a time to laugh. † This is true even today for most us. There is a proper time for everything. In the second prompt, the context tells us that â€Å"Satan laughs at Theodor and at Theodor’s sheepish neighbor who all throw stones at the hanged woman†(109). The scenario led us to think of something dreadful. We do not exactly why the woman was hanged perhaps she was caught in adultery, or that she was a witch but it looks like neighbors were against her who all throw stones at her while she was hanging dead. The only person conscientious of what is going on perhaps is Theodor. Theodor said to Satan, â€Å"It was ill time to laugh, for free and scoffing ways†¦brought him under suspicion. † Satan protested in this statement saying, â€Å"There spoke the race† â€Å"always ready it hasn’t got †¦ you have perception of humor, nothing more; a multitude of you possess that. This multitude sees the comic side of a thousand low-grade and trivial things-broad in-congruities, mainly: grotesqueries, absurdities, evokers of the horse-laugh† (109). There is something we can learn from this statement. Many people see only the comic side of the things around them or of the people they met and laugh at them. We tend to be evokers of the horse-laugh rather than objective in our judgment of anything that we see on others. Most of the time, we laugh at people even when it is an ill time to laugh. Perhaps, our problem is that we could hardly see when the right time to laugh on other people is. The best thing perhaps for us to avoid becoming evokers of horse-laugh is to always bear in mind the biblical statement, â€Å"there is a time weep and a time to die. † Reference Twain, Mark â€Å"The Mysterious Strangers†

Adlai Stevenson, Statesman and Presidential Candidate

Adlai Stevenson II (February 5, 1900 – July 14, 1965) was an American politician known for his sharp wit, eloquence, and popularity among intellectuals and the so-called egghead vote in the United States. A Democrat born into a long family bloodline of politicians and civil servants, Stevenson worked as a journalist and served as governor of Illinois before running for president twice and losing both times. He rose in stature as a diplomat and statesman after his failed bids for the White House in the 1950s. Fast Facts: Adlai Stevenson Full Name: Adlai Ewing Stevenson IIKnown For: U.S. Ambassador to the U.N. and two-time Democratic presidential candidateBorn: Feb. 5, 1900 in Los Angeles, CaliforniaParents: Lewis Green and Helen Davis StevensonDied: July 14, 1965 in London, EnglandEducation: B.A., Princeton University and J.D., Northwestern UniversityKey Accomplishments: Participated in negotiations during the Bay of Pigs, Cuban Missile Crisis, and Vietnam War. Signed a 1963 treaty in Moscow banning nuclear weapons testing.Spouse: Ellen Borden (m. 1928-1949)Children: Adlai Ewing III, Borden, and John Fell Early Years Adlai Ewing Stevenson II was born on February 5, 1900 in Los Angeles, California, to Lewis Green and Helen Davis Stevenson. His family was well connected. His father, a friend of publisher William Randolph Hearst, was an executive who managed Hearsts California newspapers and oversaw the companys copper mines in Arizona. Stevenson later told a journalist who wanted to write about book about him, My life has been hopelessly undramatic. I wasnt born in a log cabin. I didnt work my way through school nor did I rise from rags to riches, and theres no use trying to pretend I did. Im not a Wilkie and I dont claim to be a simple, barefoot La Salle Street lawyer. Stevenson got his first real taste of politics at age 12, when he met New Jersey Governor Woodrow Wilson. Wilson asked about the young mans interest in public affairs, and Stevenson left the meeting determined to attend Wilsons alma mater, Princeton University. Stevensons family moved from California to Bloomington, Illinois, where young Adlai spent most of his childhood years. He attended University High School in Normal for three years before his parents withdrew him and placed him in Choate Preparatory School in Connecticut. After two years at Choate, Stevenson headed to Princeton, where he studied history and literature and served as managing editor of the The Daily Princetonian newspaper. He graduated in 1922 and then began working toward his law degree—first at another Ivy League school, Harvard University, where he spent two years, then Northwestern University, from which he obtained his law degree, in 1926. In between Harvard and Northwestern, Stevenson worked as a reporter and editor at the family newspaper, The Pentagraph, in Bloomington. Stevenson went to work practicing law but would eventually ignore the advice of his father—Never go into politics, Lewis Stevenson told his son—and ran for governor of the state. Political Career Stevenson served as governor of Illinois from 1948 to 1952. However, the roots of his political career can be traced to more than a decade earlier, when he worked with President Franklin D. Roosevelt on the details of the New Deal. Eventually, he was recruited to take on the corrupt administration of Republican Illinois Gov. Dwight H. Green, which was known as the Green Machine. Stevensons resounding victory on a campaign platform of good government propelled him into the national spotlight and eventually paved the way for his nomination at the 1952 Democratic National Convention. The 1952 presidential campaign was largely about the threat of communism and government waste in the U.S. It placed Stevenson against a popular Republican, General Dwight D. Eisenhower. Eisenhower won handily, taking nearly 34 million popular votes to Stevensons 27 million. The Electoral College results were crushing; Eisenhower won 442 to Stevensons 89. The result four years later was the same, even though the incumbent Eisenhower had just survived a heart attack. Stevenson Turns Down Russian Help in 1960 Election In early 1960, Stevenson stated that while he would run if drafted, he would not seek a third Democratic presidential nomination. However, then-Senator John F. Kennedy was very actively seeking the nomination. While Stevenson’s 1956 campaign promise to oppose U.S. nuclear weapons development and military growth had not resonated with American voters, it did convince the Soviet government that he was â€Å"someone they could work with.† According to Stevenson’s personal biographer and historian John Bartlow Martin, Soviet ambassador to the U.S. Mikhail A. Menshikov met with Stevenson at the Russian embassy on January 16, 1960 on the premise of thanking him for helping arrange Soviet premier Nikita Khrushchev’s visit to the U.S. But at some point during caviar and vodka, Menshikov read Stevenson a note from Khrushchev himself encouraging him to oppose Kennedy and make another presidential run. â€Å"We are concerned with the future, and that America has the right President,† Khrushchev’s note read, in part: â€Å"All countries are concerned with the American election. It is impossible for us not to be concerned about our future and the American Presidency which is so important to everybody everywhere.† In the note, Khrushchev went on to ask Stevenson for suggestions on how the Soviet press could â€Å"assist Mr. Stevenson’s personal success.† Specifically, Khrushchev suggested that the Soviet press might help endear American voters to Stevenson by criticizing his â€Å"many harsh and critical† statements about the Soviet Union and Communism. â€Å"Mr. Stevenson will know best what would help him,† Khrushchev’s note concluded. In later recounting the meeting for his biography, Stevenson told author John Bartlow Martin, that after thanking the Soviet ambassador for delivering the offer and Premier Khrushchev for his â€Å"expression of confidence,† Stevenson then told Menshikov of his â€Å"grave misgivings about the propriety or wisdom of any interference, direct or indirect, in the American election, and I mentioned to him the precedent of the British Ambassador and Grover Cleveland.† Which caused Menshikov to accuse President Eisenhower of interfering in recent British and German elections. Always the diplomat, Stevenson politely declined the Soviet leader’s offer of assistance and repeated his refusal to seek the nomination. Kennedy would go on the win both the Democratic nomination and the 1960 presidential election over Republican Richard Nixon. Ambassador to the United Nations President John F. Kennedy appointed Stevenson, who had a deep knowledge of foreign affairs and popularity among Democrats, as the ambassador to the United Nations in 1961. President Lyndon B. Johnson reconfirmed him for the position later. Stevenson served as ambassador to the U.N. during a tumultuous time, through debates over the Bay of Pigs and Cuban missile crises and the Vietnam War. It was a role for which Stevenson ultimately became famous, known for his moderation, compassion, civility, and grace. He served in the post until his death four and a half years later. Marriage and Personal Life Stevenson married Ellen Borden in 1928. The couple had three sons: Adlai Ewing III, Borden, and John Fell. They divorced in 1949 because, among other reasons, Stevensons wife was said to have loathed politics. Famous Quotes Perhaps no other quote sums up Stevensons worldview better than his call for peace and unity before the United Nations in Geneva in 1965: We travel together, passengers on a little space ship, dependent on its vulnerable reserves of air and soil; all committed for our safety to its security and peace; preserved from annihilation only by the care, the work, and I will say, the love we give our fragile craft. We cannot maintain it half fortunate, half miserable, half confident, half despairing, half slave to the ancient enemies of man half free in a liberation of resources undreamed of until this day. No craft, no crew can travel with such vast contradictions. On their resolution depends the survival of us all. Death and Legacy Just five days after making that speech in Geneva, on July 14, 1965, Stevenson died of a heart attack while visiting London, England. The New York Times announced his death this way: To the public dialogue of his time he brought intelligence, civility and grace. We who have been his contemporaries have been companions of greatness. Stevenson is, of course, frequently remembered for his two failed bids for president. But he also left a legacy as an effective and polished statesman who won respect from his international peers and made a point of meeting personally with representatives of each of the 116 governors in the organization.
